Dear Friends,

I am writing to urge you to raise you voice and protest the arrest of my father, Mahmoud Salehi, well know worker activist from the city of Saqez, Iran.

On Monday April 9, 2007 police arrested my father in a deceiving manner at his workplace and then transported him to a prison in the city of Sanandaj. Salehi was told, at his workplace, that he was invited by the Mayor and the Prosecutor to discuss the upcoming May Day. However, upon arrival at the court, he was informed that the upcoming May Day was not the issue; instead an official announced that the provincial court has re-instated his sentence of one year of imprisonment and three years of detention because of his role in organizing the International Worker’s Day in 2004.

Punishing my father is not the only driving force behind this scenario; the fear of upcoming May Day celebrations in Iran has motivated the authorities to terrorize the society by arresting my father. 

I urge all workers’ unions, associations, human rights organizations and freedom loving activists to put pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran and to demand the immediate and unconditional release of Mahmoud Salehi.
